What does the RoSPA Level 2 International Award in Defensive Driving
qualification cover?

This defensive driving qualification has six learning outcomes:

1 - Understand local driving laws and procedures

Learn about the legal, safety, and cultural requirements for driving a company vehicle, including road design, social norms, environmental conditions, and company-specific policies and procedures.

2 - Understand vehicle and driver safety systems

Discover the purpose and features of vehicle safety systems such as NCAP 5 ratings, ABS, ESC, and advanced driver assistance systems like AEB, FCW, LDW, and adaptive cruise control.

3 - Understand how human behaviour influences on driving risk

Explore how human factors, journey purpose, driver attitude, behaviour, distraction, fatigue, and impairment affect road risk and ways to manage these risks effectively.

4 - Understand defensive driving principles

Learn how defensive driving reduces accidents, injuries, and fatalities while improving fuel economy and vehicle longevity. Understand different hazard types and how to manage them.
 

5 - Prepare to drive a company vehicle

Understand the importance of pre-journey checks, including vehicle safety and readiness checks, journey planning, and ensuring all necessary equipment and documentation are in place.
 

6 - Demonstrate defensive driving techniques

How is the RoSPA Level 2 International Award in Defensive Driving assessed?

The RoSPA Level 2 International Award in Defensive Driving is assessed through a combination of activities that evaluate participants' understanding and practical application of defensive driving concepts. The assessment process is designed to ensure that participants have effectively grasped the qualification material and can apply it to real-world driving scenarios. Here are the assessment methods used for this qualification:
 

Verbal questions and answers:
 

Participants will be asked to respond to verbal questions related to defensive driving concepts, road safety principles and hazard recognition. This allows assessors to gauge participants' theoretical understanding of the material.

  

 

Practical demonstration and observation:

Participants are evaluated on their ability to apply defensive driving techniques during actual driving scenarios. This assessment method involves observing how participants react to hazards, maintain appropriate speeds, demonstrate eco-friendly driving practices and exhibit overall safe driving behaviour.
  

Assessment and verification:
 

The assessments are conducted internally by the centre delivering the qualification. Trained assessors evaluate participants' performance and ensure that they meet the required standards of defensive driving competence. Additionally, there is an external verification process to maintain the quality and consistency of assessment outcomes.
