Care Practice

Choose RoSPA Qualifications

A trusted legacy of excellence, robust standards and dedicated technical support

RoSPA Qualifications is a UK awarding organisation (AO) for care qualifications, officially recognised by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual). As part of the RoSPA charity, the AO operates with its own dedicated team to advance RoSPA's charitable goals through developing qualifications.

Introducing the UK’s first Ofqual-regulated qualification in proportionate, single-handed care – a landmark advancement for the health and social care sector.

The RoSPA Level 2 Award in Proportionate/Single-Handed Care Practice is more than just a qualification — it’s a step towards a safer, more compassionate, and person-centred approach.

Designed for frontline care staff responsible for delivering care in line with prescribed handling and care plans, this qualification empowers professionals to implement personalised support that prioritises dignity, independence, and flexibility — while upholding the highest standards of health and safety for both clients and carers.

As a nationally recognised qualification, this award delivers the quality assurance that care providers, training centres and regulatory bodies can trust.

Developed by experts

As part of RoSPA’s commitment to improving lives through safety, we’ve created a pioneering qualification that sets a new benchmark in care delivery.

The RoSPA Level 2 Award in Proportionate/Single-Handed Care Practice has been expertly developed in partnership with key stakeholders including Skills for Care, Care England, and clinicians and technical specialists from NHS Trusts, hospices, and health and social care providers.

Every element of this qualification is grounded in current best practice, aligned with regulatory standards, and shaped by those who understand the real-world challenges of the sector — ensuring it meets the evolving needs of care professionals and the people they support.

What is Proportionate Single Handed Care?

Proportionate Single-Handed Care is an innovative approach that safely reduces care packages from two carers to one, enhancing personalisation and promoting dignity. It allows support to be tailored more closely to individual needs, offering greater flexibility, improved outcomes for residents, and increased efficiency for care providers.

Single-handed or proportionate care is taking a package of care that currently has two carers to complete tasks and reducing it down to one carer in a safe way. There are many advantages to Single Handed Care, but like implementing any effective change it needs good leadership and understanding  and  well-trained staff.
