Falls prevention

Staying safe and active in later life

RoSPA have developed this Fall Prevention Hub to help older people avoid falls, stay safe, prevent injury and remain independent.

Falls are the single biggest cause of accidental injuries in the home. In 2023 falls were responsible for almost 450,000 A&E attendances in England.

Whilst people of any age can be affected, falls are most common and tend to be more serious for older people. 340,000 people who attended A&E in England with fall-related injuries in 2023 were aged over 65.

Older people typically experience more falls and worse consequences because of adverse health conditions associated with biological ageing. Younger people may also experience worse outcomes of falls if they have health conditions which increase vulnerability. Similarly older people with well-managed health can improve the outcomes of slips, trips and falls they experience.

Fall Fighter is RoSPA’s free awareness session designed to help highlight the risk of falls to older people. It’s full of practical advice to reduce the chance of falling at home.
Falls can be avoided if you know how.

You’ll find lots of helpful information and advice in this web hub, including:
  • Step-by-step guides to fall prevention around the home and whilst out and about
  • Checklists to help identify most effective changes to reduce the risk of a fall
  • Video demonstrations of strength and balance routines known to help prevent falls and promote independence.

To allow everyone access the most appropriate advice, we have divided our Fall Prevention Hub into the following categories. Please choose the option which best describes what you’re looking for:
