Supporting and guiding the next generation of Women in Safety
Hear more from Loveness Marabwa and her experience with our Women in Safety leadership programme:
I first heard about the Women in Safety leadership programme when I got talking to a friend of mine in my Africa safety network. I was talking about my career challenges and aspirations, and he signposted me to the programme and encouraged me to apply. At the time, I was keen to progress in my career, but couldn’t see the way forward, and my confidence had taken a bit of a dip.
How do you think you have benefited from the Women in Safety leadership programme?
When the programme entered my life, everything changed. My confidence got an instant boost, and I realised that I was the only thing holding me back. Sharing experiences with likeminded women who faced similar challenges and desired the same growth was liberating. I no longer felt alone. And then, the mentoring phase took my confidence to new heights. My mentor helped me create a practical roadmap to achieve my three career goals. She unlocked doors within me that I never knew existed! I began taking bold action.
What changes have you implented following completion of the Women in Safety leadership programme?
I started leading more at work based on my strengths, having done a CliftonStrengths® Assessment as part of the programme, which made me feel more comfortable. I applied for a Board level position which I didn’t get, but the whole process reignited my passion for safety and my career in general. I got over the fear and started writing – a dream I had harboured for years. I am now writing articles, posting on LinkedIn, and collaborating with fellow Women in Safety programme participants on content.
The impact on my work and personal growth has been profound. I am bolder, more assertive, and unapologetically myself. People are taking me more seriously and listening to my ideas. Every day I feel bolder and braver, and my voice is being heard. I have since joined a business mentoring programme in Zimbabwe and my career goals are progressing nicely. I have discovered a level of authenticity and personal power I never thought possible.
What vision do you have for the future of women in safety?
Now I plan to pay all this forward, helping other women in safety to find the same confidence as I have. I have already signed up for and trained as a mentor on the Women in Safety programme, so that I can give back, and mentor as many women in safety leadership as I have capacity for. For me, there is great power in women coming together, as a community, speaking with one voice, asking for what they want, and supporting each other with any challenges along the way. The programme is already becoming a movement of power – the power to say yes, we can make a difference, we can lead safety, and we can be at the front of all this, instead of at the back.
In Zimbabwe in our Shona language, we say “Ndiri nekuti tiri,” which means “I am because we are,” and this sums up perfectly what the L’Oréal-RoSPA Women in Safety leadership programme has done for me. May we reflect each other's strengths, amplify each other's voices, and create a mosaic of female leadership that's unstoppable.
For me, the global movement created by the ‘Women in Safety programme’ demonstrates to other women in safety what is possible, and I am proud to be a part of this role modelling effect.
