How the RoSPA Health and Safety Awards support ESG excellence

Company: TSM UK Consulting Ltd

We talked to environmental, corporate and social governance (ESG) expert, Keith Hole of TSM UK Consulting Ltd, about his experience of supporting clients to enter the RoSPA Health and Safety Awards:

Please can you give us a quick overview of your organisation and its relationship with the RoSPA Health and Safety Awards?

“I first came across RoSPA and the RoSPA Awards more than two decades ago, when I was working in-house as a health and safety professional and was the lucky recipient of a President’s Award. Since that time, my work has evolved, and so have the health and safety and wider business landscapes.

Keith Hole

"These days businesses are not just concerned with health and safety but the wider topic of ESG frameworks. Now with my own consultancy, I support clients on this journey with their management system set-up, and always in a way that brings safety, wellbeing, quality and the environment together towards a more sustainable and successful business."

How do you think the RoSPA Health and Safety Awards is of benefit to ESG initiatives?

“When clients already have sustainability on their agenda, I encourage them to enter the RoSPA Awards. RoSPA has an outstanding reputation for the highest safety standards, both in the UK and abroad, and receiving a RoSPA Award shows you have also committed to the highest standards – not just in safety, but in the ‘triple bottom line’ of people, planet, and profit. In most cases, we want to use the RoSPA Awards as a fantastic benchmark of company performance in these areas, since they have certain criteria which drive the right ‘people, planet, and profit’ behaviours in a business. We set key performance indicators in each area, such as staff turnover for employee engagement, so we can drive continuous improvement in our sustainability mission.”

How do you think entering the Awards helps organisations?

“Deciding to enter the Awards is quite a commitment, and being clear about the reasons for doing it, and the potential return on that investment, is critical. I work with the key stakeholders in the organisation to gather the evidence needed to support the entry, and bring a new lens to the existing management system.  Through the RoSPA Awards lens, I help the stakeholders to see beyond their management system to how it has wider impacts - on employees, suppliers, partners, and local communities.  We look at things like their recruitment policy, for example, because a decision to recruit locally gives employees less fatigue from commuting and thus supports their safety whilst the same time lowering their carbon footprint and boosting the local economy.”

What would you recommend to your clients as the key benefits of entering the RoSPA Health and Safety Awards?

“The benefits of this new lens are extraordinary. Clients often don’t realise the good they are already doing and the extent of their impact on people and the environment but gathering evidence for a RoSPA Award brings it all into focus. A simple action like a regular staff get together, for example, is great evidence of commitment to employee wellbeing. Leaders feel reassured that they are not only growing a business but doing it sustainably.

"They also realise that they are delivering best practice in health, safety, wellbeing, and the environment, which then motivates them to do even more in this direction. It wins them work and sets them in high regard by their clients, reinforcing the value the client receives for the premium they pay. Employees see the commitment too, which helps staff engagement and retention which in turn boosts the company’s brand with clients, staff and stakeholders.

"Ultimately, winning a RoSPA Award builds brand reputation, the value of which is hard to measure but priceless in a world where reputation is everything and must be protected at all costs.”
