Taxi Driver Assessments

RoSPA can provide Advanced Driving Tests for Taxi and private hire vehicle drivers.  However this is not a Taxi Assessment, it is an Advanced Driving Test and does not cover aspects specific to driving a Taxi or private hire vehicle. 

RoSPA’s Advanced Driving test is based on “Roadcraft – The Police Driver Handbook” and it is unlikely that you will pass without a good knowledge of the current editions of this and also “The Highway Code”. Most people will require Advanced Driver training in order to pass the test, however you can book and take a test without training.  We would highly recommend that you study “Roadcraft” before taking the test as you will be tested to the same standards as all other Advanced Drivers.  You can purchase both books from our e-shop Shop online - RoSPA

RoSPA's Advanced Driving Test costs £67 (+VAT) and are conducted by RoSPA Examiners, who are former or current police officers. It takes between 1 hour and 1 hour 15 minutes, however this can vary depending on road and traffic conditions. The Examiner will then ask questions to test your understanding of The Highway Code and Roadcraft and you may also be asked some questions about your vehicle.

 At the end of the Test candidates who pass are awarded a Gold, Silver or Bronze grade. We understand that some Local Authorities will accept a Bronze level grade for taxi and private hire vehicle drivers, however you should check with your local council before applying for this test. Candidates who do not reach a Bronze standard will fail the test.

Please remember, RoSPA's Advanced Driving Test is not a taxi test. Please make sure that it is suitable for your purpose and that you are prepared. You will not be able to claim a refund if you decide that you no longer wish to go ahead with the test or if you fail to pass the test.
