Mike was born in Liverpool and received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Manchester and an MBA from the Manchester Business School.
He began his career with Dow in 1968 where he later became president and chief executive. In 2003, he was appointed group chief executive of BNFL, successfully dismantling and overseeing the privatisation of the company until he left in June 2009.
Mike has served on various boards and committees including as chairman of Liverpool’s economic development company, senior independent director of Crystalox Solar and SNC-Lavalin, chairman of Street League, non-executive director of the Land Domain Executive, trustee of the Energy Institute, non-executive director of Sigmoid Pharma and Laird Plc, advisory board member of Tower House Partners LLP and management board strategic adviser to the Metropolitan Police.
He was made a CBE in the New Year’s Honours in 2009 for services to the energy industry and in 2014 received the recognition of Citizen of Honour for the City of Liverpool.
Under his guidance, RoSPA has also launched several successful charitable campaigns, such as Safer Stairs, Fall Fighters and the recent success of Protect Our People. These initiatives have helped solidify RoSPA’s impact on public safety and health.
